How to calculate air receiver tank wall thickness ?
During custom air receiver tanks, many customers may wonder how to decide the thickness of the air receiver tanks, since thickness is a key parameters of air receiver tanks.
The air receiver tank thickness depends on following factors:
- Design Pressure: Pressure is the primary factor. The bigger the pressure, the thicker the air receiver. This is the most influential factor.
- Inner diameter of the tank: The larger diameter of the air receiver tank, the thicker wall required. For example, an air receiver tank with 2m diameter and a tank with 0.5m diameter, 2m tank requires a much thicker wall under the same pressure. Even tanks with the same volume but different shapes (diameter to length ratio) will have different wall thicknesses.
- Material Allowable stress at design temperature: The higher the material strength, the thinner the required wall thickness.
- Weld joint coefficient: Full penetration welds and 100% non-destructive testing, the coefficient is high, then thickness can be thinner;but ordinary welds, the coefficient is low (e.g., 0.7), and a thicker wall is required to compensate for the loss of strength.
The air receiver tank wall thickness is calculated, not looked up. A 1m³ tank with 0.8MPa will have a significantly different thickness than a 1m³tank with 1.6MPa. Even with the same volume and pressure, different materials or welding processes will result in different thickness requirements.
Therefore, during custom air receiver tanks from the air receiver tank manufacturer, customers should firstly specify requirements. Provide the air receiver tank manufacturer or designer with accurate information regarding operating pressure, volume, medium (e.g., air), operating environment, and if any certificate required-ASME, CE, CRN etc. Then require the designer to issue formal design documents; before shipment,verify that the required Certificate, nameplate, and Supervision and Inspection Certificate (TS) are complete.Also,conduct periodic inspection during using.
